Eta Sigma Alpha National Homeschool Honor Society Lambda Gamma Chapter Bylaws (Amended September 6, 2010)
I. Membership
A. Membership is offered to
(1) any homeschooled student in grades 9th -12th with a 3.5 GPA
(2) a test score of 1800 (SAT) or 26 (ACT) or 180 (PSAT) OR a 90% on the composite/complete battery on the IOWA or Stanford nationally normed standardized achievement tests*
*PLEASE NOTE: All tests must be administered in a group setting. Parent administered tests are not acceptable. Test scores may not be more than 12 months old.
B. The Lambda Gamma Chapter of Eta Sigma Alpha’s application requires
(1) an essay (approximately 200 words)
(2) 2 letters of recommendation
(3) a joining fee and a signature that the student agrees to the chapter’s Code of Ethics and Conduct C. Students may apply at any time during the year, with the exception of high school senior students. High school seniors must join before August 31 of their senior year. Students must be a chapter member for one full school year to be designated as an honor graduate and wear the Eta Sigma Alpha cords and honor shawl. Seniors who transfer to the Lambda Gamma Chapter from another chapter are excluded from this requirement.
II. Dues
A. Dues are used to cover
(1) the cost of printing
(2) a joining cord
(3) a graduation cord for each member
(4) other expenses as agreed upon by the senior advisor and parent sponsor
B. Either the senior advisor or the parent sponsor will serve as the treasurer for the chapter funds. Expenses and additions will be recorded in the treasurer’s ledger. A yearly financial statement will be prepared for the chapter and presented at the first and last meetings of each year.
C. Dues for joining members will be $25.00. There will be no price adjustment for the time of joining.
D. Dues for returning members will be $15.00.
III. Induction Ceremony
A. The induction ceremony for all new members will be in April of each year.
B. At the induction ceremony, the new members will receive their first gold cord and a certificate. Graduating seniors will receive their second gold cord.
IV. Membership Responsibilities
A. All members must report their midterm grades by the time of the January meeting. Second semester grades must be submitted by June 30th. Grades should be reported to the senior advisor. If a student’s semester grades are below a 3.5, the student will be placed on probation for the next semester. If the next semester’s grades are below a 3.5, then the student’s membership will be rescinded.
B. All members must submit, by the last meeting of the year, documentation to show they have completed 20 hours of community service that school year. Each member is encouraged to participate in the service project(s) sponsored by the chapter, but this is not a requirement for continued membership.
V. Meetings and Attendance
A. Honor Society meetings will be held every other month. The time, date and place are to be decided by the senior advisor and the parent sponsor with input from the members of the chapter.
B. Additional meetings may be called. Attendance at these called meetings will not be required, but highly encouraged.
C. Since there will only be 5 or 6 required meetings a year, attendance is strictly enforced. Each member is allowed 1 excused absence. An excused absence is defined as one in which the student has notified the senior advisor or parent sponsor before the time of the missed meeting. More than one excused absence may put the student on probation. A missed meeting, without notifying the adult sponsor or advisor, will put a student on probation. Probation will lead to rescinding of membership if another absence occurs, either excused or unexcused. In unusual circumstances, probation and the rescinding of membership may be overridden by an agreement between the senior advisor, parent sponsor and the ESA member.
VI. Election of Officers
A. The officers of Eta Sigma Alpha, Lambda Gamma Chapter will be President, Vice President and Secretary. To run for office, a student must have been a member of the Lambda Gamma Chapter for 1 full semester.
B. Duties of each officer are:
(1) President – Work with senior advisor and parent sponsor to plan meetings and to preside over meetings.
(2) Vice President – Preside over meetings if the President is not present and plan at least 1 chapter service project a year.
(3) Secretary – Take minutes of each meeting and email them to each member before the next meeting. Write thank you notes, etc., as needed.
VII. Bylaws
A. The Lambda Gamma Chapter of Eta Sigma Alpha’s bylaws must be amended to reflect any changes in the national Eta Sigma Alpha requirements.
B. Lambda Gamma may change their chapter specific bylaws by an agreement of the senior advisor and the parent sponsor or by a unanimous vote by all current members in good standing of the honor society.
The bylaws changes must be printed and distributed to each member and the senior advisor and parent sponsor.
